Ready To Reduce New Hire Turnover? We Can Help!

November 13, 2019 | Tommy Marzella

Blog-New-Hire-SurveysA few years back, a theme we know all too well today reared its ugly head. I'm talking about employee turnover in senior care. To help, we worked with providers and industry experts to launch OnShift Engage, an end-to-end employee engagement platform featuring pulse satisfaction surveys, a rewards system and new hire tracking aimed at retaining direct-care workers.

And engage and retain workers, it did! OnShift Engage customers have seen up to a 33% reduction in turnover, increased staff satisfaction and implemented changes based on the feedback submitted by employees. We were thrilled to see results like this, but we knew there was more we could do.

Research shows that 40% of all turnover in LTC and senior living occurs within the first 90 days of employment. With new hire turnover among this population so high, we had to ask ourselves, what more could we do to help providers?

So, we did what we always do—we asked our customers for their input. As per usual, there was no shortage of feedback.

After several months of research and development, we’re proud to deliver an exciting new feature in OnShift Engage to help providers better understand and refine their onboarding process. Our recently introduced new hire survey feature is an automated series of questions, delivered to new staff members during key points of the onboarding process – 7, 14, 30, 60 and 90 days after their start date. Employees are asked to rate statements and can provide optional feedback, either anonymously or choosing to identify themselves. Some examples include:

  • I feel welcome at my community.
  • I understand the policies and procedures that relate to my job duties.
  • My supervisor(s) supports me to do my job.

Supervisors can then take the feedback they receive to identify and correct any issues early and prevent new hires from turning over, as well as measure the effectiveness of their onboarding and training programs. Plus, new hire surveys, just as all the surveys in OnShift Engage, allow employees to provide additional comments. This gives staff members more of a voice within their community which today's workforce values from an employer.

Communities are already putting the new hire surveys to use and seeing great results. We're excited to hear more success stories and want to thank all of our awesome customers for their valuable input as we continue to evolve OnShift Engage and tackle the workforce crisis head on.
