The ACA is Comin’ to Town: Are You Ready for the Employer Mandate?

December 19, 2014 | Mike Pumphrey

The ACA is Comin’ to Town

I’d say the holiday season is in full swing – and this time of year I feel like I have two jobs, my full-time job and my part-time job. And when I say what my “part-time job” is, you may laugh at me, but it seems like my holiday shopping has turned into just that! Running around to a million different stores looking for that perfect gift, standing in long lines, wrapping everything…it’s not easy! Luckily for me, I don’t have to keep track of how much time this whole process takes me, but that’s not the case when it comes to your part-time staff.

With the Affordable Care Act’s Employer Mandate just two weeks away, it’s more important than ever. Is your organization ready for the changes that are about to take place? While you’ve probably been using 2014 to prepare and make sure you’re following your organization’s ACA policies, 2015 is when it will really matter.

For those of you who want a little refresher, I found this cool flow chart from the Kaiser Family Foundation. It does a nice job of outlining employer responsibilities and potential penalties under the ACA. In 2015, companies that are considered large employers are required to begin providing health coverage to their full-time employees, or those who work 30 or more hours per week (or 130 or more hours per month).  There's a lot more to it than this, but you can see how critical it is to track your employee hours and whether they are considered part- or full-time under the ACA.

Waiting until after the pay period ends to evaluate part-time employees’ hours can be risky and could cost you big bucks if they go into full-time status.  The good thing is that you don’t need to use a wait-and-see approach. With OnShift’s ACA features and predictive analytics long-term care and senior living providers proactively keep track of employee hours. Schedulers and managers get notifications and alerts of part-time employees who are at risk of going into overtime. Whatever your ACA policies are, OnShift can help you follow them.
